Why
Choose Italy ??
Italy has played an important
role in European higher education:
it is one of the four countries
that first engaged to create
the so-called "European
Area of Higher Education"
(Sorbonne Declaration, May 1998),
thus starting that type of higher
education reform which, known
as "Bologna Process"
(Bologna Declaration, June 1999)
is being implemented all over
Europe.
Today Italy ranks among the
8 most industrialised countries
in the world. Alongside some
big companies, both state-owned
and private, it has developed
a sound network of small and
medium-sized undertakings, promoted
a few scientific parks, and
is incentivating basic and applied
research in a great variety
of fields (biology, ICT, medicine,
physics, etc.).
Where
is Italy?
Italy is situated on the West
Southern border of Europe; the
peninsula, along with its sorrounding
islands, stretches out southwards
almost to the coasts of North
Africa, while eastwards it faces
the Slav-Balkan territories.

Of all European countries, Italy
is perhaps the hardest to pigeonhole:
On the one hand, it's a modern,
industrialized nation and a
Mecca of style and fashion.
On the other, it's a Mediterranean
country with agricultural land
covering much of its countryside
and a culture that is strongly
family-oriented. If you consider
the pull of history, of Rome
and the Renaissance, it's no
wonder the country that looks
like a boot is one of the most
visited in the world.
If you crave culture and arts,
you won't be disappointed. UNESCO,
the United Nations' cultural
branch, cites that two-thirds
of the world's historical artistic
heritage can be found in Italy.
Tuscany alone has more classified
historical monuments than any
country in the world. The country
is covered with remnants of
the Roman Empire, and every
region retains its own relics
of an artistic tradition generally
acknowledged to be among the
world's richest. If museums
and galleries aren't enough
to occupy your time, the Italian
Alps and the Apennines offer
world-class skiing, well-marked
hiking trails, and challenging
cycling routes. Sailing and
windsurfing are popular, and
lounging in the sun on one of
the many sandy beaches is always
an attractive option. Do you
even need to be reminded of
Italy's world-renowned cuisine?
The Italian way of life is
ubiquitous: It's in the hundreds
of local festivals taking place
across the country on any given
day; in the importance placed
on good food and drink; and
in the daily ritual of the passeggiata
("evening stroll")—a
sociable affair celebrated by
young and old alike. If Italians
are marked by a single national
characteristic, it's that they
know how to live life to the
fullest.
